How Often Should You Get a Facial?

The answer to the question of how often should you get a facial depends on your skin type, your age, environment, and your goal. You might feel excited to book your next appointment right away and it’s no wonder why. Warm steam, hydrating masque, a gentle massage, and skin so beautiful you that just keep touching your face in awe. However, we should time the next treatment just right.

General advice suggests that you should have a professional facial about every four weeks because that’s how long it takes your skin to move through the cycle of cell growth and exfoliation. Meanwhile, the treatment keeps your skin toned, clear and clean. But what about if you have acne prone skin or brown spots?

If you have acne prone skin

If you have frequent breakouts or tend to have oiler skin, your esthetician might suggest that you have a facial more often during those acne flares. In the beginning, you’ll come in every two weeks but as your skin calms down, the period of time between the treatments will probably be stretched out.

Your age is also a factor

Younger people without acne breakouts usually get facials less frequently and that’s because their skin naturally generates new cell growth faster. Their goal is to keep the skin clear of blackheads and to have a good skin-care regime but as we get older our skin might need some tweaking to help stimulate the growth of collagen.

Some of these treatments include peels and microdermabrasion in order to remove dead skin and stimulate the growth of new skin cells.

You’ll probably need a facial once a month if…

If you have little clogged bums or whiteheads that are under the skin and won’t go away. But that’s just or a short period of time because once the esthetician cleans out the pores, exfoliating products with salicylic acid will help to keep them clean.

Also, if you might need regular treatment if you have brown spots and discoloration you want to lighten.

Can I go over the top?

Yup. There’s certainly such thing as too many facials. If you get several treatments within a few weeks your skin might become overstimulated. Unless you have oily skin that needs clearing up, pay attention to the pace. Unethical esthetician might suggest an overly aggressive schedule so they can make more money, be careful.

What if I can’t go once a month?

Sometimes our budgets and our free time get in the way. If you’re unable to get a facial once a month, aim once a season. The sun and humidity can lead to breakouts or sun damage, and the cold air can dry your skin. Facials will help protect you from seasonal exposure.

Your esthetician will also suggest products that are crucial for keeping the skin healthy. She or he will tell you all about the products that are right for you and alter them as your skin changes. Make sure you use a gentle facial cleanser at home, a toner and a moisturizer twice a day. You might also need to add an exfoliator once or twice a week. A sunscreen with at least an SPF 15 is also always suggested.
